Top ten ports in Oceania

Oceania ports are strategically located in the South Pacific and play a vital role in global trade. As expected, the list of Oceania's top 10 ports includes only two countries, Australia and New Zealand, and the top three ports by container throughput are all located in Australia.
1. Port of Melbourne, Australia - Container throughput exceeds 2.8 million TEU in 2021
The Port of Melbourne handles more than a third of Australia's container trade, making it not only the busiest port in Australia, but also the busiest port in Oceania. Its international container terminals Swanson Dock and Webb Dock East handled a combined 2,889,288 million TEU of cargo in 2021.
In general, the port handles about 8,000 containers per day, with a total trade volume of $80 billion per year.
2. port Botany, Australia - Container throughput exceeds 2.7 million TEU in 2021
The Port of Portney, the second busiest port in Oceania, handled 2,761,569 TEU in 2021, accounting for 96.6% of container trade in New South Wales, Australia. The port has a total capacity of 7 million TEU.
The port has three container terminals operated by three terminal operators, Dp World Australia, Patric terminals and Hutchison Port, and has 12 container ship berths and 3,793m container terminal shoreline.
3. Port of Brisbane, Australia - Container throughput exceeds 1.5 million TEU in 2021
Located at the mouth of the Brisbane River, the Port of Brisbane is Oceania's third largest container port, with a container throughput of 1,554,061TEU in 2021.
The port has nine container vessel berths with a 2,469 metre shoreline and is leased and operated by three operators: Patrick Terminals, DP World and Brisbane container Terminals. With a total of 29 berths and a dock line of more than 8,200 meters, it handles more than $35 billion in international trade annually.
4. Port of Tauranga, New Zealand - Container throughput exceeded 1.2 million TEU in fiscal year 2021 (30 June 2020-30 June 2021)
The Port of Tauranga is the fourth largest container port in Oceania and the largest in New Zealand, with a container throughput of more than 1.2 million TEU in FY2021.
Officially opened in 1998, Tauranga Container Terminal has a 770m long heavy-duty terminal, seven container cranes, and a 380,000 SQM container yard that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
5. Ports of Auckland, New Zealand - Container throughput exceeds 810,000 TEU in 2021
The Port of Auckland was ranked the fifth busiest port in Oceania, despite a 7% decline in container throughput in 2021 to 818,238TEU, of which 108,113TEU was transported by rail.
Auckland Port is a relatively large import port in New Zealand. The port is adjacent to the city's central business district and three-quarters of incoming cargo is destined for Auckland.
6. Fremantle Ports, Australia - Container throughput exceeded 770,000 TEU in 2021
The Port of Fremantle is the sixth largest port in Oceania, handling 778,614TEU of containers in 2021 and handling about $22.5 billion in trade annually.
The port comprises two container terminals and four berths, operated by DP World and Patrick terminals, each with a height of four metres and a total length of 1,252 metres.
7. Lyttelton Port, New Zealand - Container throughput exceeded 430,000 TEU in fiscal year 2021
Littleton Port is not only the seventh busiest port in Oceania, but also the largest port on New Zealand's South Island, with a total container throughput of 438,343TEU in 2021.
Located on the northeast coast of Banks Peninsula, the port is a major export gateway for coal, logs and agricultural products, with good road, rail and coastal waterway connections.
8. Port Adelaide, Australia - Container throughput exceeds 360,000 TEU in 2021
The Australian port handled more than 360,000 TEU of containers in 2021 and is currently ranked the eighth busiest port in Oceania.
9. Napier Port, New Zealand - Container throughput exceeded 270,000 TEU in fiscal year 2021
Napier Port is the ninth largest port in Oceania and the fourth largest port in New Zealand. With a 2021 container throughput of 276,000TEU and a total of 242 container ships, the port is the country's main export hub for pulpwood, logs, canned foods, apples and pearls.
Currently, the port is being expanded through the construction of a sixth terminal, which will facilitate the berthing of large container ships and will also be able to support twin gantry cranes.
10, New Zealand Centreport (Port of Wellington)- Container throughput exceeded 90,000 TEU in fiscal year 2021
Centreport, based in Wellington, is Oceania's 10th largest port, with container throughput of about 91,900TEU in 2021. Following the Kaikoura earthquake in 2016, the port was severely damaged, both financially and operationally.
Emergency repairs were carried out a year later, and insurance was completed at the end of 2019, and the restoration project at Thorndon Container Terminal is now operational to help restore the port and its throughput.
