On October 12, Maersk announced that it had opened a new Chicago Air Cargo terminal near O 'Hare Airport to enable the immediate transfer of airport air cargo to the new facility.
According to Maersk, 70 percent of the United States is within range of night trucking, allowing important shipments from Asia and Europe to reach their destinations quickly at critical times.
The terminal will also serve Maersk's air cargo hub at Rockford International Airport, a rapidly growing 24/7 air cargo hub.
Mike Meierkort, Regional Head of Maersk Logistics & Services North America, said: "We look to expand our air operations and logistics services in key locations, and today's Chicago opening is an important step in our integrated offering to our customers. We look forward to creating more route choice and flexibility for customers looking to improve their air cargo supply chain." The new Chicago Air Freight Terminal provides an integrated supply chain solution for time-sensitive cargo transportation."
According to Maersk, the new facility is a bonded Container Freight Station (CFS) in cooperation with U.S. Customs and operates as a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) certified Cargo Screening Facility (CCSF) to ensure timely and safe handling of air cargo. This allows priority handling and sorting of imports and exports.
For imported goods, the time required from arrival at the ORD gateway to preparation for delivery is within 24 hours. For export goods, the time from arrival at ORD gateway to tender and carrier is no more than 24 hours.
